Top 5 TV Series That Feature Urban Music.

For the last couple of years there has been a large number of TV series that played urban music on rotation, we therefore have compiled five of our favourite TV series that featured urban music in the last few years.

1. Insecure

A tv series created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, it follows two African-American female friends, one Molly, who is a successful attorney struggling to find the perfect relationship, and Issa, who works at an educational institution while facing challenges with stabilising her long-term relationship. As much as we love the brilliant script, amazing Inglewood, California views the Solange Knowles consulted music in season 1 has played a huge role in keeping us addicted to the show featuring records such as “Heart Crush” by BJ The Chicago Kid, “Feel No Way” by Drake, Vince Staples “Norf norf” and some rare original records. The music is amazingly set to suit every scene and this alone make Insecure one of best TV shows playing urban music.

2. Black-ish

Is a hilarious tv series starring Tracee Ellis Ross & Anthony Anderson based on a modern African-American family that is living what most would perceive as a comfortable lifestyle. As much as we can appreciate the show for its humour, we appreciate it even more for being informative and educational about social issues, in an entertaining manner. The show plays some of the freshest and latest urban music on a regular basis and it is simply one of the best comedy series on television right now.

3. Ballers

Television series starring Dwayne Johnson as Spencer a retired American football player who seems to be in search of financial stability in the lavish city of Miami working as a financial manager for athletes. After hearing “Right Above It” by Lil Wayne and Drake as the opening theme song on my first view of the show I was already sold, from then on I only expected the best of urban music to be played and I am yet to be disappointed by this show.

4. Atlanta

The Donald Glover created television series has been one of the most hyped series in the urban culture mainly for its uniqueness. The series follows Donald Glover starring as Earnest “Earn” Marks and Brian Tyree Henry as Earns cousin Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles, who is in pursuit of a successful rap career. One would already expect the show to be on par with its music as it is about an up and coming rapper and I must say season 1 played some of the hardest records and at times it played some rare smooth jazz and RnB records which was much appreciated. The season ends off with a classic Andre 3000 verse of an Outkast record "Elevators (Me & You)". Overall the show has been an outstanding representative of the urban culture and music.

5. Power

A crime drama series produced by 50 Cent, so you already know it is going to have the hardest gangster rap records and boy does it go hard! They got “Big Rich Town” by 50 Cent and Fat joe as their opening theme song, throughout the last 3 season they featured a substantial number of popular rap music such as Oxymoron by Schoolboy Q. If you are yet to see this series I suggest you check it out.
